Argonash-line art

Description

So I've decided to teach myself more about digital art over the summer. This is just some line art for a character I made. I have a general story line in my head for this character but I probably won't do any writing for it for a while. I'm just going to call him Ash for short.

So this is the easy part, line art. I'm probably going to post multiple colored versions of this in the future. I see myself doing a lot of experimentation. I-I'm probably going to rage quit a lot...

If anyone has any good tips for digital painting with Photoshop CS5 it would help!!! I also have no idea what people mean by making brushes. How do you make a brush?

...

I'm so in over my head T_T

Brushes can be useful for roughing out texture, I like making a plain lightly textured background with the basic shapes and lighting before starting, it stops my brain from going blank looking at a white page.

if you want to create your own brush, first create a greyscale document (RGB is fine too but will be converted to greyscale when you save the brush) and either use photo-manipulation or painting/scribbling to get an interesting texture. Black will be 100% opaque, white is transparent (on the brush level, pressure sensitive opacity will still apply).

when your done click "edit > define brush preset" to create the brush, give it a name and then set it up with the settings you want in the brush settings panel, the defaults often are not what you want. remember to save the new version with the settings or you will discard them if you change brushes.

if you use low spacing, you can make interesting brushes, I use speckled brushes to add rough detail to hair and fur, then a standard brush for detailed strands that stand out. A high spacing makes a stamp, so you could stamp your signature or stars wherever you want. by adjusting the spacing you could draw for example, a string of hearts <3

In your drawing, after colouring, an overlay layer with "scaled/scaly" brush patterns could help accentuate the characters volume, very lightly brushed in in highlight areas on the arm.

feel free to ask me if you have any other questions about brushes   >^,^<
